I substituted great northern beans for the butter beans and i chopped an Onion and cooked it with the ground beef in place of the onion powder.
I have made a variation of this recipe (which we call calico beans) for over 40 years. Everyone loves it and it usually always shows up at family potlucks. I began using 1/2 pound hamburger and 1/2 pound breakfast sausage(I use Jimmy Dean) years ago and it definitely adds flavor. I sometimes use green Lima beans, other times I use the large butter beans, but I always use beef & beans and kidney beans. You just cannot go wrong with this recipe, it’s my favorite. I also sometimes bake them in oven, then transfer to Crock-Pot to keep warm while serving. You get a depth to flavor in oven cooking. Do what works best for you at that time, they will always be yummy
