Oh wow I made this today and yes it came out great…it did remind me of when I was a kid and eating this downtown wool worth store in Brooklyn, NY downtown Fulton St…the good old days my Mom would take me and my sister and we would share a slice of this cheese cake…..awww to be a kid again
My aunt pointed me to this recipe because it was the exact same recipe my grandma used to make so making this was a comfort food with a lot of sentiment as my grandmother passed away, last year. Whenever she knew the family was coming over, she always had a big pan of this waiting for us and we’d all fill up on her wonderful dinner and then sigh with content while we relaxed with a plate of grandma’s much-loved cheesecake. I don’t think we discovered that it was a Woolworth’s recipe until just recently. I was ecstatic when my aunt passed this on. Being a disastrous cook, I was worried I’d mess this up, too, but it came out absolutely perfect much to my delight.
We’re a military family living in Japan, right now, and the movers sent us the wrong box of kitchen stuff so I didn’t get my mixer sent to me. I had to mix everything by hand. I bought graham crackers and crumbled them myself for the crust and sprinkled them across the top of the finished cake. Like others have said, this isn’t your typical cheesecake. It’s not super thick and overly rich. You could also top this with cherries, blueberries, chocolate, whipped cream, etc. It’s almost more like a creamy lemon fluff…but wow, is it good. My aunt said my grandmother didn’t put the added lemon juice in when she made it, but I made it with the lemon juice and honestly didn’t notice much difference. I am already making another pan of this to send upstairs to a neighbor who had us over last weekend as a “Thank you”. I know this will also be a staple revived in our own family for many years to come. How special that even after my grandmother is gone and I’m halfway around the world, I’m sitting here eating “her” cheesecake, looking at the ocean, and remembering her.
